The British Coat of Arms

The British coat of arms was officially adopted in 1837. It features a golden lion and a white unicorn holding up a shield. It is officially known as the Royal Coat of Arms of the United Kingdom.

The British coat of arms has a shield with several elements. It features the harp, for Ireland, the red lion rampant, for Scotland, and the golden heraldic lions, for England. There is no symbolism for Wales, because it is considered to be part of England itself.

It’s elements date back to the 1100’s and they have undergone many changes. The British coat of arms has the motto “Dieu et mon droit”, which means “God and My Right”. An interesting fact is that the unicorn is depicted as being chained, because they were considered to be dangerous in legends.
