The Croatian coat of arms was adopted on December 21st, 1990. It features a large main shield, which is checkered with red and white squares. This checkerboard has been a symbol used by King’s of Croatia since the 900’s AD.

The crown is located on the top, which is made up of 5 shields. These shields on the Croatian coat of arms stand for five historic areas in the nation. These include the Republic of Dubrovnik, Istria, Dalmatia, and Slavonia.
