The Dominica Flag

The Dominica flag has a 1:2 proportion and was adopted on November 3, 1978. The design has a green background. In the middle, is a red circle, which is bordered by ten stars (representing the ten parishes). The middle also features the Sisserou Parrot. Three colored bars extend out from the middle both up and down. They are red, black, and yellow.

The Dominica flag has undergone small changes since 1978. The bird symbol encourages citizens to achieve and attain their goals. The stars stand for equality and hope. The cross stands for Christianity. The three colors of the cross represent the Trinity.

Green represents the landscape. Red represents justice. Yellow is for sunshine and farming. Black stands for the earth and African ancestry. Finally, the white in the Dominica flag represents water and purity. Before 1978, the banner contained a Union Jack based design.

The nation’s capital city, and largest city, is Roseau. The Dominica flag belongs to a nation whose national motto is “After God is the Earth”. The national anthem is titled “Isle of Beauty, Isle of Splendour”.
