This Gambian coat of arms was adopted on November 18th, 1964. It features supported by two lions (one holding an axe and one holding a hoe). The shield is blue and is bordered in green and white. It depicts an axe and hoe crossed in yellow. A Knight’s helmet is located at the top, with an oil palm on it. The banner at the bottom contains the country’s motto: Progress - Peace – Prosperity.
The lions on the Gambian coat of arms stand for the colonial history. The axe and hoe symbolize the importance of farming. They also may represent the two ethnic groups: the Fulani and the Mandinka.
