The Greek coat of arms was officially adopted in 1975. It consists of a blue shield with a white cross on it. It is surrounded by green laurel branches. The military wears this insignia on their uniforms.
The Greek Coat of Arms has had many previous versions. One dating back to 1822, depicted the Goddess Athena. The current version was designed by Kostas Grammatopoulos. The shield is similar to the cross in the upper left corner of the country’s flag.
Many previous versions of the design also contained the white cross on a blue background. The version of the Greek coat of arms used from 1935-1973, and even earlier for a period, was inspired by the Danish royal arms. This happened during the reign of King George I.
