The Greenland coat of arms dates back to 1470. In its current form, it was adopted on May 1st, 1989. It was designed by Jens Rosing. It features a silver polar bear on a blue shield.
The polar bear is used because it is an animal that can be found in the country. It became more popular used during the early 1900’s, when the Greenland coat of arms was depicted on stamps. The bear has also been used in Danish coats of arms.
