The Iowa flag is made up of three vertical bars. The colors are red, white, and blue. The white bar is larger than the other two. The colors represent the French tricolor, as the state was part of the Louisiana Territory.
A bald eagle is featured soaring in the center and carrying a banner that says “Our liberties we prize and our rights we will maintain”. Below this, the word “Iowa” is written out. The Iowa flag was designed by Dixie Cornell Gebhardt in 1917. It was officially adopted on 1921.
