The Iranian emblem is made up of a sword in the middle, and four crescents (two on each side). These five elements represent the Principles of the Religion, which are part of Shi’a Islam. It is in the shape of a tulip, because legend has it that those who die for the country will have a tulip grow on their grave. The Iranian emblem was designed by Hamid Nadimi. It was adopted in May of 1980.
