The Latvian coat of arms was adopted on November 18th, 1918. The top part of the shield features a yellow sun on a blue background. It has seventeen rays that represent the nation’s seventeen districts.
The Latvian Coat of Arms is supported by a red lion and a silver griffin. They represent Courland and Semigalia, and then Vidzeme and Latgale, respectively. It was designed by Rihards Zarins.
