The Louisiana flag is set on a blue background. It features a symbol called the “pelican in her piety”. It features a bird biting into her own breast to feed her young with the blood. This is a Christian symbol of sorts, which represents charity.
Below this bird, a banner with the state’s motto is depicted. The flag was designed 1912, but was changed slightly in 2006. The Louisiana flag had two versions prior to this one. They did not feature the pelican.
