The Luxembourg coat of arms was derived from the Duchy of Limburg, and it dates back to the Middle Ages. A very primitive version of this design was first adopted by the first Count of Luxembourg, Henry V.
A red lion with two tails is depicted on the center shield. The background consists of alternating white and blue stripes. The lion of the Luxembourg coat of arms has a yellow tongue and a yellow crown.
