The Macedonian coat of arms was officially adopted on July 27, 1946. It depicts tobacco, wheat, and poppy buds. A sun, mountain, and lake are depicted in the middle. A red star is located on the top.
The Macedonian Coat of Arms was designed with the Soviet Union’s coat of arms in mind, and does not contain heraldic emblems of the nation. Talks to replace the current coat of arms with a new one, mainly a gold lion on a red shield (a symbol of historic significance to the country), have started in 1992, but such changes are controversial and have so far been rejected.
