The Maldives flag is made up of two rectangles. A smaller green rectangle is placed inside of a larger red rectangle. A white crescent is located inside of the red rectangle. The banner has the ratio 2:3.

The Maldives flag is rich in meaning. The color red represents sacrifice and boldness. The green represents coconut palm trees, which are abundant in the country. The crescent moon stands for Islam.

The design was officially adopted on July 25, 1965. Earlier versions of the Maldives flag existed, many of which contained the colors black and white on the left side in a rectangle pattern. The nation consists of hundreds of islands, and is located below India.

The largest city and capital city is Male. The Maldives flag belongs to an entity whose national anthem or song is titled “In National Unity Do We Salute Our Nation”. There is no national motto. The currency is the Rufiyaa.
