The Mauritius coat of arms was defined in a 1990 law. It uses a dodo and a sambur deer as its supporters. The shield is divided into four sections. It depicts a ship, palm trees, and a key. The motto “Stella Clavisque Maris Indici” is written on a ribbon on the bottom of the Mauritius coat of arms. It means “Star and Key of the Indian Ocean”.
