The Michigan flag is set on a blue background and features the state’s coat of arms in the center. The seal depicts a shield with a sun rising over a lake. A man with a gun is also depicted, which represents peace and defense. A bald eagle, an elk, and a moose are also depicted.
The Michigan flag also features three Latin sayings: I will defend, Out of many one, and if you seek a pleasant peninsula look about you.
The banner was adopted officially in 1912. Two previous versions of the Michigan flag have existed. One of these designs featured Stevens T. Mason, who was the first governor of the state.
