The Netherlands coat of arms was adopted of on July 10th, 1907. It was confirmed on April 23rd, 1980. It features a yellow lion with a coronet holding a sword. It holds seven arrows in its other paw. These stand for the Union of Utrecht’s seven provinces.
A banner with the motto “Je Maintiendrai” is located on the bottom. It means “I will endure”. A slightly different version of the Netherlands coat of arms was used in 1815, but some elements date back even further. This similar version was adopted by William I, the first king of the Kingdom of the Netherlands. It combined elements of the Dutch Republic’s coat of arms, with the Orange-Nassau family’s coat of arms.
