The Spain Coat of Arms was officially adopted on October 5, 1981. It is also featured on the Spanish flag. It was proceeded by Francoist Spain’s arms.
The Spain Coat of Arms is full of symbolism. The crown stands for the Constitutional monarchy, the supporters represents the nation’s location, and the elements of the shield represents the old kingdoms of Spain.
These kingdoms are Aragon, Leon, Castile, Navarre, and Granada. The shield also features the arms of the House of Bourbon as well. The supporters on the Spain coat of arms are the Pillars of Hercules and contain the motto plus ultra, which means further beyond. Similar versions have been used throughout the nation’s history.
