The Virgin Islands coat of arms (British Virgin Islands) was adopted in 1960. It features a green shield with a depiction of St. Ursula holding a lamp. The background contains eleven other lamps. The bottom of the Virgin Islands coat of arms features a yellow banner with the word “Vigilate”, which means “Be Watchful”.
The Islands got their name because they reminded Christopher Columbus of St. Urusula, who traveled through Europe with 11,000 virgins.
