The Wales coat of arms is actually the arms of the Prince of Wales. It is based on Llywelyn the Great’s coat of arms. He was a famous Welsh prince from the 1200’s.

It depicts four heraldic lions. Two are yellow on red backgrounds. Two are red on yellow backgrounds. The Wales coat of arms was seldom used as a national emblem, but is now gaining in popularity. In 2007, discussions were held to make the design the official coat of arms.
